Word Study
Much of our English language is made up of or is derived from Greek- and Latin-based words. If a student can learn and understand the meanings of prefixes and suffixes, they they will have the ability to better understand new words if they recognize and remember some of these word parts.
During Word Study, we don't just receive a list of words on Monday and test on them Friday and then move on to a new list of words the next week. I want children to truly master and build their working vocabularies and their ability to spell words correctly, including how to use different forms of a word in the correct context.
Academic vocabulary is another area of word work that students need practice with along with content vocabulary. As I review students' daily work, I will encounter commonly misspelled words by the class as a whole. Homophones are a great source of misunderstanding for fourth graders.
Therefore you will see a variety of types of words coming home for your child to work with. Check the Homework Tab for when homework is assigned.
