Reading
Reader's and Writer's Workshop are the framework within which the teacher gives a mini lesson on a certain skill or learning goal and students read silently, read to someone, listen to others read, work on writing, and do word work--a.k.a. word study --to practice a skill being learned.
Students engage in independent reading, reading with partners, book clubs, guided reading groups, and one-on-one conferring with the teacher during workshop time.

Reading isn't just reading the words on the page. It is being able to make meaning from the text. By fourth grade, students should no longer be learning to read; they are reading to learn and we want them to think more deeply about texts. This means that they need to reach for books that have well developed characters and plots and need to respond to what they are reading.
What are we doing in reading class currently?
In the beginning days of school, we are stressing selecting "Good Fit" books -- not too difficult and not too easy. I have a fairly good idea of the level of book students can handle based on their end-of-third-grade DRA assessments or their MAP assessments taken this fall fi they were not a student with us in the third grade.
Students are also working on developing stamina during Independent Daily Reading and applying the strategies we are learning good readers us to help them understand what they are reading. We are working on visualizing, making connections, and simply how to share thoughts and ideas and participate in class.

Reading Levels
Students will be given their DRA level and their Lexile reading level once beginning of the year testing is completed. The Common Core State Standards expect students to be reading at a Lexile range of 770-980 in the 4-5 grade bands.
Find out what books your child can handle by entering in their Lexile level or look for books at a particular level.
